Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Stanley Manne Research Institute Re-Accredited for Protecting Research Participants

Lurie Children’s and the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute were awarded full re-accreditation by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) at the September meeting of its Council on Accreditation.  An independent, non-profit accrediting body, AAHRPP uses a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model to ensure that human research protection programs meet rigorous standards for quality and protection. AAHRPP promotes high quality, ethically sound research through an accreditation process that helps organizations worldwide strengthen their research protection programs.

Lurie Children’s earned its initial full accreditation in September 2013, the fourth institution in Illinois to receive this “gold seal.” With over 1600 active studies involving research participants, the AAHRPP re-accreditation signifies that through established policies, procedures and practices, Lurie Children’s is committed to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement.

The Lurie Children’s Human Research Protection Program is comprised of all persons and departments engaged in the planning, design, review, conduct and administrative support of any research involving human participants. In addition, it is guided by the ethical principles of respect for persons, beneficence and justice.

“This accreditation signifies that Lurie Children’s, through its established policies, procedures and practices is committed to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement,” said Thomas Shanley, MD, Chief Research Officer and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “The ‘gold seal’ offers assurances to research participants, researchers, sponsors, government regulators and the general public that our Human Research Protection Program is focused on excellence.”

Lurie Children’s is one of the top children’s hospitals in the country according to U.S.News & World Report. It is the pediatric training ground for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and one of only a handful of U.S. children’s hospitals with a dedicated pediatric research center. It was the first children’s hospital in the country to receive the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence.
